Natural Geological Wonders

Walk along the coast to see Maria Island's oldest rock formations.

Day tours generally give you about two hours of guided walking time. This allows you to explore the coastal trails leading to two distinct geological sites. You can view the patterned sandstone at the Painted Cliffs and the limestone beds at the Fossil Cliffs.

These walking routes cover about 10 kilometers in total. Since no cars are permitted on the island, you must explore on foot. Wear sturdy walking shoes and follow the strict carry-in, carry-out policy for all rubbish.

The Painted Cliffs

1 hour walk returnDo not climb rocks

Wind and water carved these sandstone cliffs along the coast. Iron oxide stains the rock to create distinct swirling patterns. Visit during low tide in the afternoon sun to see the colors clearly. Remember that climbing on the fragile sandstone is prohibited.

These towering limestone cliffs contain a high density of marine fossils. The rocks hold clam-like shells dating back 300 million years. You can look closely at the cliff face or loose rocks to spot the preserved shells. Do not remove any fossils from the national park.
